All about Morning After Pill

What is Morning After Pill?

Morning After Pill (also known as emergency contraceptive or more popular as Plan B) is a backup plan that helps prevent pregnancy from happening after unprotected sex or birth control failure and is not for routine use. It works by preventing pregnancy after unprotected sex through either disrupting the ovulation process, disrupting the meeting of the egg and sperm, or thickening the lining of the uterus to prevent implantation. Note: This is not an abortion pill.

How many doses do I need?

A box of the morning after pill contains one pill with a dose of levonorgestrel (1.5mg). There's no need to take any additional contraceptive pills—this one dose is enough. Taking more than one pill in a day won’t increase your chances of preventing pregnancy. In fact, doing so may increase your risk of experiencing side effects like nausea or dizziness. Think of it like a strong, concentrated medication: more isn’t always better. It’s similar to taking extra paracetamol—you won’t feel better faster, but you might feel worse because of the excess dose. Stick to just one, and it will do its job effectively.

Do I need a prescription to get one?

No, you do not need a prescription.

How long am I protected for after taking morning after pill?

The morning-after pill is only effective in your body for a short period and does not provide long-term protection against future pregnancies. When taken as directed, it helps prevent pregnancy after a single incident of unprotected sex. If you are sexually active, even occasionally, consider exploring regular birth control options. You can consult with your healthcare professional or visit a family planning center or clinic to find a method of birth control that best suits your needs.

I am breastfeeding. Is it safe for me to take morning after pill?

Yes, you can use morning after pill while breastfeeding. Generally, morning after pills have not been shown to have harmful effects on breastfeeding or on the health, growth, or development of the infant. However, there have been occasional reports of reduced milk production in some mothers.

I am pregnant. Can I still take morning after pill?

The morning after pill does not have any effect if you are already pregnant; it will not terminate a pregnancy or harm your ability to carry to term. Taking the morning-after pill while pregnant is discouraged because it offers no benefits to your body or your baby.
